Christianity in the UK is being reshaped by global Christian migration. This workshop with Professor Alex Chow (University of Edinburgh) offers a fresh perspective on biblical hospitality – going beyond welcome to explore how Scripture calls Christians from different cultures and traditions to receive one another, work together, and bear faithful witness to the Gospel in an increasingly diverse church.
About the Speaker
Professor Alex Chow is Co‑Director of the Centre for the Study of World Christianity at the University of Edinburgh, co‑editor of Studies in World Christianity, and editor of the Liu Institute Series in Chinese Christianities. His research focuses on Christianity in China, East Asia, and the global migration of Christian communities. He has authored and edited multiple influential books, including Chinese Public Theology (Oxford University Press) and Chinese Heritage in British Christianity (SCM Press).
Learning hospitality again: Christianity, migration and biblical hospitality.
Christianity in the UK is not simply declining or disappearing – it is changing. Much of this change is being driven by the global movement of Christians, as believers from many nations now worship, serve, and witness alongside one another in our local churches.
This workshop invites you to step back and see this moment with fresh eyes.
Hosted with Professor Alex Chow (University of Edinburgh), the session explores how global Christian migration is reshaping British Christianity – and why this should lead us not to fear, but to theological reflection, renewed hospitality, and deeper cooperation in the Gospel.
A new perspective on Global Christian Migration
Migration has always been central to Christian history. Today, Christians from Africa, Asia, America, and Eastern Europe are helping to sustain and grow Christian presence in the UK. Drawing on extensive research, Alex will help us understand how increases in church attendance and Christian identification are often connected to these global movements.
Rather than seeing migration as a challenge to a ‘Western’ Christian tradition, this workshop reframes it as a reminder that Christianity is – and always has been – a global faith.
Biblical hospitality
Hospitality is a familiar word in church life, but Scripture presents it as something far deeper than warmth or welcome. Biblical hospitality challenges assumptions about who belongs, who hosts, who leads, and who learns.
In this session:
· How global Christian migration is influencing church growth and identity in the UK
· Why hospitality in the Bible goes far beyond friendliness or inclusion
· What it looks like for Christians from different cultures and denominations to work together for the advancement of the Gospel
This is an invitation to rethink hospitality as a deeply theological practice—one that reshapes community, power, and mission.
Who is this workshop for?
This session is ideal for:
· Church leaders and ministry teams
· Christians involved in cross‑cultural or multi‑ethnic ministry
· Anyone interested in the future of Christianity in the UK
Those asking how we can faithfully live and work together in a globally connected church
