Preaching is a theological act. It stands at the intersection of Scripture, culture, congregation, and the preacher’s own spiritual life. Faithful proclamation therefore requires more than sound exegesis — it needs disciplined attentiveness to multiple realities at once.
In this live webinar, Ian Coffey will explore The Four Worlds of the Preacher, drawing on the influential homiletical framework developed by Haddon Robinson. Robinson contended that effective preaching emerges from a preacher’s capacity to inhabit four distinct yet interrelated worlds simultaneously:
· The Biblical World — careful engagement with the text in its historical, literary and theological integrity
· The Contemporary World — discerning awareness of the cultural and intellectual climate in which we minister
· The Congregation’s World — pastoral sensitivity to the lived experiences, questions and spiritual formation of the gathered community
· The Personal World — the preacher’s own character, formation, and integrity before God
Ian will reflect on the theological tensions and practical implications of holding these worlds together responsibly. How do we remain faithful to the authority of Scripture while speaking meaningfully into contemporary culture? How do we avoid collapsing preaching into mere relevance or, conversely, abstraction? And how does the preacher’s own spiritual formation shape the authenticity of proclamation?
This session is designed to stimulate thoughtful reflection and renewed intentionality in sermon preparation and delivery. A live question-and-answer will follow, providing space for theological engagement and practical questions.
This webinar will particularly benefit ministers, lay preachers, ordinands, and theological students seeking to deepen both the intellectual rigour and pastoral integrity of their preaching ministry.
